Students learned the same microfabrication techniques to make a variety of devices such as solar cells, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, etc. Participants were exposed to 3D printing and learned how to communicate with a variety of sensors using an Arduino microcontroller. During freezing the cells are loaded with compounds that are found in the freezing solution. We believe this does not happen in a uniform fashion with some cells being loaded with more compounds than others. In this SEM image you can see that the cells are under different stresses which is why some look normal, and others look dead or extremely hypertonic.
